SOLA HOT MINI 5K

11th annual Sola Hot Mini 5K - SEPTEMBER 21, 2024 @ 8:30 AM

OUR STORY

Sola was born in 2012 through the work of John and Jeanne Luther. Through their love and tireless efforts engaging those around them, Sola has become a cornerstore in North Raleigh. In 2018, Jeanne  was diagnosed with ALS, and began her walk of suffering publicly in the walls of Sola. Throughout her fight with ALS, Jeanne was selfless, brave, and consistently managed to serve those around her despite her growing physical inabilities. After 3 and a half years, Jeanne went home in April of 2022. This race is a way for our community to rally behind those who are suffering from an often non-discussed disease and bring hope to those who are suffering.

WHAT IS ALS?

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or also know as Lou Gehrig’s disease) is a progressive degenerative disease that destroys the neurons that control voluntary muscles. Most people with ALS become totally paralyzed as they lose the ability to walk, talk, eat, swallow, and breath. the life expectancy is 3-5 years. at any given time, we are roughly 30,000 people in the usa who are fighting als. At this point in time, there is no cure for ALS.

SOLA HOT MINI 5K PARTNERS

Every year, we gather together at Sola for our Sola Hot Mini 5K. Since Jeanne’s ALS diagnoses in 2018, we started raising money for ALS research. Since 2018, we have raised well over a half million dollars to #EndALS. We disperse the funds raised to a handful of organizations that we feel play a big role in one day finding a cure for ALS.

Team Drea Foundation: Our dear friend, Andrea Peet, was diagnosed in 2014 with ALS. From that day she made it her mission to raise awareness of ALS and to inspire people to live bravely, love joyfully, and appreciate the gift of life. Andrea was a former marathon and triathlon competitor. But she didn’t let ALS stop her from what she loved to do. Andrea has competed in 50+ marathons, half marathons, and triathlons on her recumbent bike since her diagnoses. She recently completed a marathon in all 50 states while living with ALS. She has gone on and been brave and done quite a lot of the ALS community.

ALS TDI: The ALS Therapy Development Institute is the world's foremost drug discovery lab focused solely on ALS. As a nonprofit biotech, they operate without regard to profit or politics. They are led by drug development experts and people with ALS, our Watertown, Massachusetts based lab is funded by a global network of supporters unified to end ALS. Their mission is to discover and develop effective treatments for ALS.

Duke ALS Clinic: Dr. Bedlack and the team at the Duke ALS Clinic has been Jeanne’s doctors since her diagnoses in 2018. Dr. Bedlack has spent the past 20 years in ALS research working tirelessly to find a cure for ALS. There goal at the clinic is to utilize disease modifying therapies to slow progression. The multi-disciplinary team identifies specific symptoms and problems and provides a wide range of options for dealing with them. They are always on the lookout for new therapies in our active research program and discovering new clinical trials to one day narrow it down to a CURE.
